A UX practice normally relies on understanding the problem, and empathy with the user. But, as we mature as a field, we’ve begun to ask, “Is empathy enough?” Can designers and researchers ever actually understand the user well enough to act as a proxy? How do we avoid designing bias into our systems? Does the user need representation on the design team? Would that even fix the problem, or just introduce new ones?
